I hope this site becomes a place for dialogue and the exchange of ideas. I want to raise consciousness about issues and stories that don't always make the headlines. I believe that global awareness makes a person smarter and ultimately more human. I'm grossed out by what some "news" outlets masquerade as news. It seems that so many of these outlets cover international stories only when there's catastrophe or war. It's a shame.

There are so many fascinating people doing important things out there. As a journalist I've been blessed with the opportunity to travel all over the world. I want this to be a place for everyone to find out about people and organizations that I've encountered that are doing good work. I'd like to share some of my experiences and invite all of you to share your thoughts and stories you think should be told. Let's expand our horizons together!

Spike in utility bills...
Was watching a report on a morning show today about how dire the U.S. economy is. Gas prices are at all time highs, the housing market is experiencing its biggest slump in years and home utilities are becoming costlier. A woman was kvetching about how she can only do one load of laundry a day now. What?!?!
I guess this initially shocked me because between my husband and me, we do laundry once every two weeks. But, as the biggest consumer of resources on earth--by a long shot--we haven't had to think twice about how often we do laundry, how much water we consume, or how air conditioned or heated our homes are. Rather than rushing to figure out how to perpetuate this gross consumption, we should be thinking about how we can conserve and become more efficient. Fortunately, a trend of conservation has been ignited and people are looking for ways to reduce consumption.

While I know that , many are suffering a change in lifestyle and wallets are getting affected, I can't help but think that what's happening is actually a good thing. The planet has finite resources and we are exploiting them at an unprecedented pace. We are being challenged to balance and regulate.

Greed begets greed and doesn't it seem like we may be experiencing a consequence of gross excessiveness? I hope we can start "thinking twice" about how we conduct our lifestyles and not be so seduced to consume exhorbitant amounts of things we don't need. When millions in other countries are experiencing major food crisis', think about all that we waste. Nothing annoys me more than when I order a salad and a giant, heaping portion of food that I will never be able to finish shows up. Wouldn't it be great if we could get into the habit of consuming only what is necessary.

It may be some time before people will be conscious of their actions. Regarding folks who really need to wash that much in a day, get a tankless water heater and an energy star rated washer...sheesh.

I like to spend, and that is not a crime. However, the material wealth is at times valued more than spiritual wealth. I think it's the culture. People are very visual. I remember tasting the most delicious vegetables when I was growing up, and they were not the visually pleasant vegetables. Living is not visual. It is feeling, tasting, sensing, interacting, sharing, loving, hurting. I hope I can grow above shallowness that I have at times, and grow into a spiritual being. I get very distracted though...by mostly watching TV.

I agree. It is disheartening to see how much we can waste in just a single day. We feel like we need our money's worth, so we demand more bang for the buck. Especially now, since the economy is on everyone's stress list, people want to spread their dollar. Maybe we're spreading it a little too far. We probably don't need to spend it quite like we think we do.

It's time to walk to the light. Donate what you don't NEED to someone who does.
