I hope this site becomes a place for dialogue and the exchange of ideas. I want to raise consciousness about issues and stories that don't always make the headlines. I believe that global awareness makes a person smarter and ultimately more human. I'm grossed out by what some "news" outlets masquerade as news. It seems that so many of these outlets cover international stories only when there's catastrophe or war. It's a shame.

There are so many fascinating people doing important things out there. As a journalist I've been blessed with the opportunity to travel all over the world. I want this to be a place for everyone to find out about people and organizations that I've encountered that are doing good work. I'd like to share some of my experiences and invite all of you to share your thoughts and stories you think should be told. Let's expand our horizons together!

There is certainly no shortage of issues that should demand our attention, but here’s a list of some that I think are of vital importance. Please share with me your thoughts on these and issues that are of concern to you.

"Stop Loss"
Saw the film starring Ryan Phillipe over the weekend and haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. According to Wikepedia, Stop Loss, in the U.S. military, is the involuntary extension of a service member's enlistment contract in order to retain them beyond the normal end term of service (ETS) or the ceasing of a permanent change of station (PCS) move for a member still in military service.

Whether you support the war or not, the over taxing of our troops is wholly undeniable. While some critics of the film have characterized it as one sided, I think it should be required viewing for Americans so they simply become aware of the policy. It should be our responsibility to familiarize ourselves with such policies that so severely impact the moral, psychological condition and physical impact of our troops. It is an issue of epic importance as it directly impacts our national security.

Having spent time in Iraq post invasion, I became friendly with a number of servicemen. After his second tour, one young man told me, "Lisa, I'm not normal and I'm having a hard time re-adjusting to life back home."

As a child growing up at the end of the Vietnam War, I distinctly recall how American war veterans were treated and continue to be treated after risking their lives in war. I never thought that during my lifetime, this behavior would be repeated again.

How can one deny that a back-door draft has been instituted? After multiple extensions of their military contract, if a soldier feels he/she cannot do another, he faces arrest. Where is the justice when a soldier repeatedly risks his or her life, family and psychological state while everyone else goes on with their lives? Is this making us safer?

I remember it too, though most of it was hyped info, capitalized on by politicians more recently in the 1980s here in NYC and elsewhere as the "forgotten parade" I think the truth was, it was never a declared war, yet the scale of it overshadowed the sacrifice of those that served, many had been young volunteers and inductees in WWII, the servicemen and women that served in the Korean War a war which still stands without treaty. America basically wanted to fight an air calvary war in Vietnam, but weather, and translation problems, along with mechanical ones, caused a withdrawal of what I read as all the helicopters (former SOS Colin Powell of the Bronx his son the former FCC chairperson, was ballyhooed for crashing in one I think recall) by 1972.

stop loss shouldn't even be happening and soldiers shouldn't have to decide on being pulled back into service or going to jail for their refusal. why don't the government offer incentives for the soldier's willingness to extend their contracts instead? give them the option.

I understand that the refusal to serve an extended stay with the military can result in possible imprisonment. I don't mean to come off as being stoic but, If the soldier (he/she) feels so strongly against the return to battle that they WOULD DO ANYTHING to avoid the horrors of war, then my question is; WHY NOT DO THE JAIL TIME?

To any soldier who has been in the thick of battle, with their life on the line everyday, at any moment, serving a stint in JAIL IS A CAKEWALK.

I have a friend who has a brother in the military. He has served in Iraq, and like many other soldiers, has been affected by actively engaging in war. I know that she wants him back home real bad. If he had to serve time in jail (im not sure how long the sentencing is), in order to end his commitment to military life, I would convince her family to seriously consider allowing him to GO TO JAIL. Initially it sounds like it SUCKS, but its an option.

There is nothing in jail that a soldier of war cant handle. Jail does have ways of breaking peoples spirits, and causing psychological issues from being confined to closed quarters for long periods of time, but I have faith that OUR "BRAVE" MEN AND WOMAN IN UNIFORM CAN HANDLE IT.

Most Army personnel who desert their posts are NOT given jail time at all. Some are allowed to simply return to their units, while most are given less-than-honorable discharges. Other ways that enlisted Army men/woman can be discharged from active duty include:

=======================
* They are determined unable to meet physical fitness requirements.
* They are found to be unable to adapt to the military.
* They say they are gay and are required to leave under the so-called “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
* They go AWOL.

=======================

I thank you Lisa for providing a forum where we can share our honest opinions, and that was my HONEST opinion. I am a CHRISTIAN. I am NOT homosexual or homo-phobic. Its a "no brainer" - GO TO JAIL! Or, of course they could alway "SAY THEY ARE GAY" in order to be discharged - It sure beats coming home and committing suicide. Which begs the question - WHAT WOULD YOU DO / SAY TO GET OUT OF THE ARMY?

This is a website from the US Government listing every casualty from this war. It makes interesting reading if you analyse the amount of "accidents and friendly fire" deaths there have been. Also the large amount of "deaths under investigation" there still are.
To be sent back again and again after counting down the days to come home makes me question the freedoms we are supposed to have here in America.

Stop Loss is a very powerful movie which shows the true honor and sacrifices of our soldiers. Regardless of your feelings about the war, our soldiers deserve our prayers and thanks.

I am tired of our modern day chicken-hawks and neo-cons who accuse those who criticize this war as not supporting our troops. Sending our troops into Iraq under the hubris assumption that they would be greeted as liberators only to be placed in the middle of a civil war and then stop lossing them is not supporting our troops.

I truly hope you will all go see this movie!!
